Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

WesTex Connect has tried to add as many FAQs that our customers have questions on.  If you do not see a question you feel should be on this list--please email INFO.

What is PPP?
PPP (Point to Point Protocol) is a method to actually make your machine a part of the internet.  This means that you can run graphical programs like Internet Explorer or Netscape to view the internet with pictures and sounds in a comfortable Windows or Macintosh environment.

What is an ISP?
ISP (Internet Service Provider) is an internet provider that servs netwrok access to people (users/clients) primarily including world wide web (www) access, email, ftp, and news services.  This gives access to a lot of users.

What is the Internet?
Internet is just a big fancy word for a HUGE NETWORK.  The internet, being a huge network, is essentially just a HUGE AMOUNT of machines all connected together.

How Do I Download a File?
Click the file that you wish to download -- It will ask you where you want to save the file -- A window will open that says "Save As" at the top -- In the top middle of the box you will see a button with a down arrow -- Click once on the down arrow and it will show a "C:" -- Clcick on the C: and select Desktop -- Then click the Save button -- From here it could take 2 minutes to 2 hours depending on the file size.  Once the file is on your hard drive -- Double click the file off of your desktop and it should start installing for you -- answer any questions it may ask.

What if my downloaded file ends with a ".ZIP"?
If you have a file that ends in .ZIP -- this simply means that a compression program was used to make the program compact and easy to send over the internet.  You will need a program like WinZip or PKUNZIP to uncompress the files.

  type in the program in the Search field.

How Do I Send Someone a File Through Email?
In Outlook Express you can attach a file to an email by:  Prepare your email as usual -- Before sending choose Insert, File Attachment -- Select the file location and select Attach .  Press Send to send the message.

What is a Domain Name?
A domain name is a unique identifier for your site on the internet.  (Examples: westexconnect.com, wtconnect.com, microsoft.com, etc.)

How do I register a Domain Name?
WesTex Connect can help you register your own domain name for use with email and the world wide web.  There are two costs involved: A $70 charge from Internic which guarantees the use of your domain name for two years and a $35 a year charge after that; there is also a one-time $50 setup charge from WesTex Connect.

What is Virtual Hosting?
Put your domain name to use! Where Can I Find Virus Information?
You may want to check out Virus Protection Software Sites such as: McAfee, Symantec, or Dr. Solomon.  The only way for a computer virus to do damage is if it is downloaded or launched.  You should be wary of opening attahments if you do not know where the file came from.  There are also many virus myths and hoaxes out there -- Click on the link below to find some of these out.
